The new avatar of Microsoft's WSS 3.0 is SharePoint Foundation 2010. It facilitates interaction and collaboration between groups of people involved in a company, including employees, business partners & customers. One way it does this is by offering the platform and tools for creating sites intranets, extranets & internet websites targeting specific audiences.
The company can also custom build web applications and business solutions. The product's inherent scalability and centralized management allow it to expand along with company growth. The product's libraries and lists can easily fit in millions of items.
To help reduce the impact of these large lists, resource throttling can be applied judiciously. Via the "Connect to Office" feature, MS-Office can intuitively make specific libraries that are frequently used available for opening or saving files. Access to the product, therefore, can be directly through an office application on the PC, or via a browser or even a mobile device.
The Workspace feature is perhaps the best way to explain how robust the collaboration aspect can be. Entire sites along with libraries and lists are taken offline so that certain groups or individuals can do local work on it. When reconnected, Workspace will sync all the changes from every local source.
For developers and the IT staff, it is an even sweeter deal with lots of functionality and very little coding. The product includes over 40 out of the box web parts which can add functionality to site or page with a few clicks. It also has permissions management with six default permission levels, managed accounts to reduce overheads, claims based authentication and easy configuration wizards.
To make it even more of a walk in the park, SharePoint Ribbon will contextually find the relevant features. But the icing on the cake is surely the possibility of skipping the whole purchase, installation & maintenance routine by opting for a hosted solution. SharePoint Foundation hosting clients can directly start work on the platform and start collaborating and building whatever sites and applications they might need.
This means clients get 24/7 support from providers, not to mention rock solid security with firewalls and backups on a daily basis. Note that the product has a multi-lingual interface. Given today's global environment and the product's capability for collaboration, it's fair to say that the hosting provider will also need to offer the same multi-lingual support.
All these things can be sorted out simply by choosing a Microsoft Certified Partner like Apps4Rent. This company offers both shared & dedicated SharePoint Foundation hosting. Choose a plan from their list of offerings, and it's a near certainty that the platform will support every feature in the product.
